Bad Breath

Question:

Our dog is a joy to be around at 4 months old, barring the normal housebreaking and nipping. He loves to be close to our faces, unfortunately his breath in the last 3 weeks has been bad. I have started brushing his teeth about once a week with a minut amount of over the counter(human)toothpaste, and it does the job for a day or so. But then the little guys breath returns to the bad odor within two days. Should I be doing somethinbg else? Should we stop feeding him the rawhide bones?
