Question:

: I have 2 JRT's, Jake (3 yrs. old) and Arci (6 years old). Arci will approach Jake (usually when he is resting after playing) and will begin to kiss him. He tries to avoid it by turning his head, but Arci is persistant and Jake usually gives in. They really get into it! They lick eachothers tongues and noses rather sensually. My stepmother says that they are cleaning eachothers mouths. That sounds a little funny to me. Could it be that they are just showing affection? They both like to try and kiss my husband and I on the lips too.

Hi Jill,
This is a submissive gesture. In wild dogs, the mother feeds her pups by throwing up for them. While I think it does have some affectionate motives, licking each others' mouths and yours is asking you to puke for them. It's a compliment, really.
There is a great show that is occassionally shown on Discovery called "Wolf." If you can catch it, set the VCR. It's a great show, and explains many, many behaviors in wild animals that we still see in our domesticated dogs. You'll enjoy it.
