Question:

: I know I've seen something on this, but I couldn't find it in the archives.

: My 5 year old JRT has started peeing on his 9 month old sister. I think the older (male) is trying to mark where the younger (girl) has gone, but I've never seen this before. Any thoughts or advice? The little one is getting hesitate to go out with her brother. Thank you.

Hi, Shira,

Other reps may have more to add to my response, but it's been my experience that my dogs will pee on each other out of excitement and sometimes because of lack of exercise. That's how it is in MY pack anyway. As a matter of fact, I caught my female, Looise, hiking her leg up and "annointing" my male, Rowdee, more than once. He just more or less shakes it off and is completely unphased and they go about playing together as if they were littermates.

There are many more reasons for this kind of thing though. Dominance, insecurity, and many other things could come into play, and it's hard to know for sure what's going on with your dogs based on how little you've written. If it's really an issue and your female is becoming fearful, I would suggest that you seek some professional advice from someone who can actually observe your dogs together.

Good luck!

Jane
