Question:

: We have the most wonderful JRT in the world! We love him and to us he is perfect except for one bad habit. He is a nipper. He does not really bite, he pinches with he front teeth. He gives a nasty pinch. It's happens mostly when he plays. I know we should have put a stop to it when he was a puppy. We would say no, but then go on with play time. It's not his fault it's ours. Now he is 16 months old and we need to fix our mistake. What would be our best method to try to correct this behavior? He loves being in his crate too much to consider it "time out".
: Help!

Hi Donna,

You are correct in that you have created this behavior. The instant he nips I would alpha roll him and then give him a short (2 to 3 minute) time out in his crate while I completely ignore him for that time period. Everyone in the family has to be very consistant with this and do it every time he misbehaves because hehe will be waiting for you to slip up.

Best,
Sue
