It sounds normal if you're washing the dog every week. I'm sure he has no natural oils on his skin at this point, and I wouldn't be surprised at all that he's shedding so much. He may also develop some skin problems.

I wash my dogs maybe once or twice a year. A coat that's left alone will keep itself clean naturally.

Please consider not washing your dog so much. Improvement will take some time, as it may take a couple or even a few months for your dog's coat to regain any kind of natural condition.
