Crate Training & a smart JRT

My JRT is 6 months old, and incredibly smart. When I crate him during the day, he will lift up his little crate mat (or newspaper, etc), and will defecate under it. Then he will cover it back up and lay down on the nice dry mat. I don't want to remove the mat/paper from the crate, as it helps keep him warm. And (quite honestly)it saves me from having to bathe Spike every day. This is the first dog that I've had which didn't crate train overnight; then again, this is the smartest dog I've ever owned! Suggestions would be appreciated!
