CRUISING THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Question:

Hi: My JRT, Buster, is a little over a year old, & we love him dearly, but I believe he would rather be anywhere, and I mean anywhere, other than at home. We seem to be the last thing on his priority list, after he has checked out any other potential "fun". Everyone in the neighborhood tells me that "you know, Buster is everyone's dog". Well, I'm sorry, but they don't worry about him staying out all night and pay his vet bills! I thank God they love him or he probably would not still be on this earth! He got pretty good for a while and would be home when we got home from work ( we have another dog, a lab, whom he completely ignores unless she is the only game in town), but he is going back to his old ways of disappearing and we have to go find him at one of his favorite haunts! I wanted a companion for my lab when I got Buster, but it backfired. Any other dog in the neighborhood is better than her! I know our being at work everyday is tough on him - but the retired people in the neighborhood seem to keep him occupied! Our lab stays at home and behaves beautifully, which required much, much discipline. Discipline really doesn't seem to do anything to Buster except make him angry. I apologize for this being so lengthy. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Also, he is extremely aloof and not the least bit affectionate, but his mother is one of the most lovable dogs I've ever seen. Help!
