Question:

: We had a JRT for nearly five years. We had a baby almost three years ago and right from the start, Lucy (the dog) loved Emma and was never mean to her. She would "kiss" her to the point of ridiculousness but other than that no issues. We taught Emma to be respectful of the dog, and Lucy would sometimes bring her toys to Emma to share. We are getting a new puppy (Lucy was hit by a snowplow) in a few months. What should we do differently now that Emma is here first? We have already planned to send a blanket with all of our scents on it to the new puppy before we pick her up. And of course remind Emma to be extra careful with the littler puppy. We want this to work... please help!

To insure that everyone will be happy, you should wait for your little girl to grow up a little before introducing a puppy into the family. The next dog you get, even if closely related to Lucy, may very well turn out to be a stellar opposite of her. Don't take chances. Heed the Bad Dog Talk and Online Profiler, and give it a couple years.

I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but there are just so many Jack Russells that wind up unwanted or child aggressive because people are too impatient to wait until their situation is ideal for bringing a JRT into the house. I know I couldn't advise you to take the chance.
