Question:

: My 10 month old male killed a rat and was so excited he ran to me and was his usual self wanting to kiss and be petted. I did not know how to react since my first instinct was to run from him. I really did not want him to kiss me after knawing on a rat. What would be the correct reaction from me? does it matter? We have a huge backyard and I love my garden so I don't want to discourage him killing pests.

OK you may not want to hear this, but you are suposed to tell him what a good boy he is and then remove it from his mouth and throw it in the trash.
Remember that even thought he has kissed a rat, that his mouth is a lot cleaner than a humans ever will be. Sorry I had to giggle a lot when I first read this, it sure took me back to when I first got a Jack Russell almost 17 years ago.

Wait untill they sneak something in the house and drop it at your feet when you have company and then look at you, Momma, didn't I do good? Wag Wag Wag!!!
Have fun with your Terrier.
