Hi, Marcia,

If you leave your terrier alone in the crate for more than 3 or 4 hours at this age, he may just not be able to hold it. And if you free feed him, then he DEFINITELY can't hold it. (Free feeding is leaving food out extended periods of time.)

I have terriers who were a year old before they were housebroken. There is no rule of thumb. They're housebroken when they're ready, but four months is definitely WAY too young to expect much.
