: Our happy JRs have the run of fields which will soon dry to meadow grasses which include foxtails and other barbed weeds. They will have to endure anesthesia and many vet trips unless I can find some breatheable device to cover their noses (I am thinking like horses use to keep flies away). Is there such a thing?

Check into a "softie" type muzzle that is used for racing. They are made of nylon with a mesh over the front. It may work for keeping things out of their noses. If they are also getting them in their ears then you may have to have something constructed for that purpose.
