Question:

: Last weekend while at a terrier trial I bought a slip type leash/collar combo. I have been seeing others use these very wide collered slip leashes at trials, especially around the race track for a couple years and finally came across some for sale. I bought one and enjoyed it all weekend. While driving home my dog started acting uncomfortable and it was then that I noticed his throat and cheeks were swollen. He swallowed funny and kept trying to work something out of his throat. He is pretty much better now after some rest, no collar, baby asparin and massage. All I can think of that would have caused this was that he was yanking so hard on that leash all during racing. He gets so excited and just won't listen. Silly dog always places well in obedience, but he sure doesn't act like it around the race track :o) I assume the gacking he was doing was just him not understanding the feeling of a swollen neck. I am afraid to use this leash again, even though I wanted one so bad. I figured the wideness would cushion the tugs he gives me, but maybe the squeezing effect hurt him. I was wondering if any of you have tried this leash or if anyone has heard of anything like this happening? Should I use it again or toss it? It seems like everyone else enjoys theirs and it's certainly easy to take on and off during racing. Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes, I use this type of leash all the time with no problem, at all. Mine are the wider type about 2 1/2" around the throat, and have a fleese liner in them but I have the other type too. This is what they are made for, so that they won't damage the throat. I don't know anyone that has a problem before. If your dog is pulling that much then I would suggest that you crate him during racing, when I am running on in the races, I move my crates closer to the track, so that they will be handy.
Sorry I haven't had a problems.
