Question:

: I've read the section on grooming that is posted on the website, but I do not wish to perform the grooming myself. Do most people groom their own Jack Russells or do they take them to a professional groomer? I would like suggestions/references on finding a groomer that can handle my Jack Russell. I'm new to the New Jersey/Pennsylvania area. Can you recommend anyone in/around South Jersey/Phildadelphia area?

Hi, Stacey,

I'm afraid we don't make recommendations here, but I'll tell you what I always tell people to do to find good dog boarding care, training, grooming, etc. Take out the phone book and call a whole slew of vets in your area. Tell them you're new to the area and would like to know if they can make a recommendation for a reputable, skilled groomer. If the same name comes up several times, chances are that's a good bet.

And no, not everyone grooms their own terrier. Those who show their terriers at Terrier Trials do it the "old fashioned way" which is called "stripping" the terrier's coat. We use various grooming tools (stripping blade, magnetic stripper, duplexer, lava stone, etc.) or our bare hands to remove all the dead hair and leave a healthy, new coat on our dogs, but to be honest with you... I just use clippers and scissors on my little Gritty. He's no show dog, so I don't bother with the hours it takes to strip his ridiculously fast growing, thick coat, and he's certainly none the worse for it! He falls asleep at the sound of the clippers humming, actually.
