Question:

: Hi Heather - My vet will run allergy tests, which are quite expensive, but that will find out what the dog is allergic to. I was lucky, eliminated corn and bingo! He is fine. I have a friend who's JR is very allergic to grass, etc. which you really can't avoid. She is in the process of giving her shots each day to de-sensitize her. In the end, the hope is to eliminate the allergies. This person needs to find a vet who will run allergy tests on the dog. To me, using prednisone is the easy way out. Thanks for letting me pass along a comment. Keep up the great work. We all REALLY APPRECIATE your hard work - ALL of you reps.

Hi Susan,
Thanks for your kind words. Your allergy story is a prime example of why testing is so important. The solution could be so very simple, rather than having so many possible side effects, not to mention the expense. And of course, there are the other routes that your friend is seeking for the more difficult allergies, which I think are a better alternative to steriods as well. I don't like the idea of covering up symptoms rather than treating the actual problem.
A friend of mine has a 6 year old female who was tested and is allergic to the grass in their yard, the trees in their yard, many food ingredients and wool. So, Terri is slowly working on a process of re-seeding the yard with a different variety, taking out the trees and replacing with new ones, developing a diet with the ingredients she can eat and putting down wood floors (most carpets contain wool). But as she said, "Nothing is too much for my baby!" I couldn't agree more!
