Question:

: My dearly beloved Jack Russell died about a month ago, and I am heartsick. I "adopted" her as a three year old, and would love to adopt an adult again. I saw one on your web site that looked and sounded wonderful, but I have three cats,(and 78 acres), and wonder if you would not consider allowing me to adopt from you because of my kitties. I would have a lot of trouble keeping them separated. Thank you. Diana Gafford

Hi Diana,
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. It must be extremely difficult to deal with. I am glad to hear your experience in adopting an adult was a good one, and one you would like to repeat. So many people think they MUST have a puppy and that an adult can't bond, which is so untrue.
No one here can say "yes" or "no" to your question on adopting. This answer is the responsibility of the rescue rep who reviews your application and conducts your interview. Their process is much more in depth than the short paragraph you've written, and it wouldn't be fair to make a decision from your brief description or in the place of someone else.
I can say though that fenced yard (not the size of a piece of land, jacks know no property lines) and cats are serious considerations in adopting. I would recommend taking a week or two to come up with a plan for separating, should it ever become necceassary. A rescue rep may not be comfortable adopting a dog to a situation that says, "I can not separate them." Even a dog who tests well with cats can turn out to be not-so-great (or deadly) with cats a year, two, three, nine down the road. It's a big risk.
My other reccomendation is to go to the rescue section of the site and fill out an application. That is the best way for you to get in touch with the nearest rep and to express your interest in adopting. Keep in mind that application processing does take a good bit of time, as will finding a dog that tests well with cats. So, be super patient.
Good luck!
