Question:

: I have two small pets and when I get my JRT the puppy will not be able to reach their cages. But I'm still concerned about it, how would I be able to train him to leave them alone and will I be able to?

Hi Jessie,
Never underestimate the "reach" of a Jack Russell Terrier. They can climb and dig and jump their way into just about anything. Even if you mounted your critters' cages on the ceiling, and shut and bar the door to the room, my two would hang out at that door 24/7 and it would be one big scratch mark and possibly full of holes. It would drive them to distraction to smell hamster, ferret or what-not in the house, and I really couldn't put them through that sort of torture. This is an instinct that is STRONG and purposely bred into this terrier for hundreds of years, and it isn't going anywhere. Even if it could be trained out, I wouldn't do it; that's what this dog is all about and I wouldn't have them any other way.
