Question:

: I have a 9 month old female JRT and am building a new
: house. I am considering an invisible fence but w/ JRT's
: being so smart, I'm wondering.... if they get thru it,
: they won't want to come back thru it if they're called.
: Or..are they smart enough to remember its there, or is their will strong enough to chase that frisbee or ball
: even if it is outside the invisible fence? Thank you.

Hi Lauri.

I know people for whom electric fences have worked very well. Their jack russells learned the boundries and will not go near it.

I also know the other side too. We had a question here recently about a woman whose jack went to the fence line and got shocked, now the dog will not go in the yard--at all.

I also know of jacks who crossed the line, got shocked and then said--no way--I am not going back, I will get shocked.

You must also know that I do not personally beleive in shocking dogs to do ANYTHING. But, if you live in a town with a no fence law--it is better than the dog getting hit by a car. You need a form of pet containment. A majority of jacks die by getting hit by cars and not old age.

You must asses your jrt and decide whether a shock may be too much for it and cause it to fear you or the yard. You must decide whether one shock will teach it a lesson and he will not go out. If you do not have a choice, well then you should do it.

Try contacting Bob Franklin at farmcliff@home.com He has extensive experience with electrical fences and is very much in favor of them.

Good luck and keep those jacks contained!
