Question:

: I don't usually like to admit it but we got our little boy from a pet store. It's a long story how that actually happened but I'll spare you the details. The stories I've heard about pet store purchases only being emotional purchases and frequently result in abandoment make me very upset. I love Basil very much. He as much a part of my life as my adopted kitties and my husband! We buy in the best food, toys, etc. and give him the best care we know how. We love to play in the park and go for long walks and rides all over town. I spend time almost every day on this site reading the new posts to learn more and have read several books. I want my little boy to have a happy healthy life.

: There is one main concern that I have though. How will I know if he has any genetic problems? Are there any blood tests to do to make sure he is as healthy as he appears? I know about the eye test and will be making an appointment on my next vacation. But is there anything else I can do to make sure that he isn't suffering from something that I know nothing about?

: I hope I will not judged by your staff or readers by getting my pup from a pet store. He captured our hearts from the first minute and remains there unconditionally!

: As always, thank you so much for all of your hard work in answering everyone's (and my) questions. I've learned so much and and grateful for the time you put into this site.

Hi Jonna.

It sounds like your little boy is extremely lucky to have found you. I am sure his life is all the better since you adopted him. Congratulations on your puppy.

If you do not know the dog's pedigree, then you will need to educate your self about the breed and possible problems. There is a link below to which you can refer.

The best thing you can do is to make sure your baby gets regular check ups.

You stated you already know about getting CERF tests done on an annula basis and that is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also remember that if you spot any signs of eye problems, try to go to an opthomologist.

Jack Russells should also be Baer tested to make sure they hear properly. If your jrt was deaf --you would have knonw it by now. If he is uni-deaf, that too will soon become evident.

When you go to the vet, have them check out your jack's patellas. Jacks are known to have luxating patellas. Mine has them and they have NEVER been a problem. Others, because the dog hocks on its legs, get surgery done.

Another excellent check list for you is the registration application from the JRTCA. There is a vet certification that requires the vet to check off certain things. This goes down the list of the "defects" that can affect a jack.

Remember, not all defects are life threatening. It may just mean that your jack should not be bred and has his own unique qualities!

Also, your jack may be just fine.

It sounds like he is in great hands in receiving lots of love and attention. Given that, you are bound to notice things that my be wrong. Giving your jack regular check ups and proper medical attention should help you.

Enjoy your baby boy and good luck,
