Question:

: I have a 7 week old male JRT. I do have a couple bones (he seems to like my bigger dog's bones better than the small ones) and a couple of cat toys. He still seems to like getting into other things. Could you recommend any really good toys for him? About how many toys should he have? I've heard only 5 toys, but I think he would like to have more of a variety of toys.

Your pup is likely getting "into other things" because he thinks EVERYTHING is a toy; the more you give him, the less is he able to distinguish between what is his and what his yours.

"Toys" should never be considered a substitute for human interaction; rather, the toys you give your pup should serve a purpose. Chew toys are just that; toys that should be "chewed" without risk to the dogs health. Play toys encourage your dog to be active and "comfort" toys are those that soothe and quiet the dog when he is stressed.

As a responsible owner, it is up to you to make these decisions for your pup. There is no such thing as too many toys; what matters is that you make sure what you give him is appropriate and safe.

Good luck,
Leslie
