| Question:
: I have a female Jack Russell Terrier that is 10 months old. I purchased her when she was 8 weeks old. when I have company at my home she goes nutty. She does not try to bite but she is so rough with everyone new. She jumps all over them and will not stop until I go over to her and force her to stop, which is not easy. As soon as I sit back down, she is up and all over the company again. She is a very intelligent dog but I am getting so frustrated with her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ------------------ Response Area ------------------- Your girl is at a great age to enroll in a good obedience school. There she will learn (along with you) what it takes to be a model terrier. Having just completed basic obedience with one of my terriers, he learned sit/stay, down/stay, the command "leave it", some modicum of recall, walking on a loose lead, automatic stop, stand/stay, sit for petting and down for petting. As you can see the last two will come in very handy in your situation. These dogs are so bright, and if you make the time and effort, you will be amazed on how quickly she will catch on. In the meantime, until you can do this, a very quick fix is to crate her. When your company comes crate her until you think that maybe she is calm enough. Let her out and if she misbehaves, re-crate her. Repeat steps if necessary. Good luck! Marie |
