Question:

: I bought a female Jack Russell puppy that has a red or liver colored nose. The JRTCA standard says that the nose should be black. It does not say it has to be black. Why is the color of the nose a issue? Is a red or liver nose uncommon?
: Thanks, Donnie

Hi Donnie,
The liver nose or red nose is a genetic defect and is often a sign of foreign blood in the Jack Russells. Most Terrier breeds call for a Black nose. Please remember that the JRTCA Standard comes from the Standard in England, the country of Origin for the Jack Russell. No, it isn't common but sometimes these thing happen and when you are dealing with recessive genes they can crop up after many, many generations. Have fun with your Terrier, that is the main thing.
