Question:

: I have two Jack Russells: A 4 yr old male and a 7 month old female. I got the female as a companion to the male, opting against another male due to the same-sex aggression tendencies. Recently they have begun some serious fighting. The female has become quite territorial and possessive of the bed, and will often growl when the male gets close. Occasionally they will begin growling for no apparent reason, and this will typically escalate into an episode of fighting. Tonight the female had the male by the leg and would not let go. In a panic I violated the rule of trying to break them up and paid a pretty steep penalty: I suffered some nasty gashes on my left hand.

: All of this background leads me to my question: Are there any disciplinary or training tips you can suggest to eliminate this violent aggression? I understand sometimes it will naturally occur, but these recent episodes have been rather frightening.

Hi Mark,
Aggression isn't limited to just same-sex pairs. While getting a female increased your chances of a good match, the temperment of that dog and her ancestors are a factor. As is socialization as a pup (not bringing her home too young) and later socialization with other dogs outside your home.
For now, please keep them separate and rotate their house and yard time. Talk to your vet about a behaviorist to work with your dogs. This isn't something that can be cured in any length post, and you need someone to work with you personally.
Good luck!
