| Question: : I teach obedience classes and I just wanted to tell everyone about a bad halti experience. I've never used them and don't recommend them for my students. A very excited rottweiler came in for his first class yesterday. He was wearing a halti and was trying to bark and play at the same time. His owner gave a firm pull on the halti and the dog nearly bit his tounge off. Needless to say, it was a bloody mess all over my floor, and they took the dog to the vet. I know that haltis have been very effective for some dogs and some trainers swear by them, but after the incident last night, I have to say that I now REALLY don't like them. ------------------ Response Area ------------------- Thanks for pointing this out. We always recommend that people first consult with a trainer before using any type of training aid, and that includes a Halti or Gentle Leader. The example you brought up is just one of the reasons that these types of devices need to be fitted and shown how to use properly. The improper use of these training devices can cause serious injury and should not be used unless the handler knows how to use them. Hard corrections should never be used with a Halti or Gentle Leader. Regards, |
