Question:

: I aquired a 6 year old jack russell about a year ago. He has been very loyal and somewhat obedient from the beginning. Is it worth my time and money to accompany my jack russell to obedient school. I've always heard the older the dog, the tougher it is to train them. I would appreciate any information that you can provide. Thank you.

Hi, Efren,

Yes, it is worth your time to go to obedience classes. If your terrier is already obedient, it will only get better with proper instruction from a qualified trainer.

I can also tell you first hand that in doing rescue, adult terriers are easier to train than puppies. Puppies are exceptionally unfocussed, and are typically quite a handful when you're trying to train them. Adults, even very mature adults, will welcome the attention and leadership that obedience class will show them. An older dog with a more mature mind can be a really awesome thing to train. In my house, training never stops. I have a geriatric German Shepherd that I still work with... I just don't expect him to move half as fast as he used to!

Good luck!
