Question:

: : I got my jack russellfrom a breeder. The thing is she wasnt a very good breeder. How could i tell, she hadnt socialized her puppies and she also had a few other liters of puppies. One litter was a litter of jack/rats.She was selling the jack/rats for 100 dollars.well my puppy had a very short tail and it is still very short. The woman also said the puppies were born with a small tail its only about an inch and a half. Do you think there is any chance my puppy could be a mixed breed? i dont mind if he is i will still love him all the same.

: Hi Ashley,
: I am sorry but there isn't any way I can tell you if your dog is all Jack Russell. Being born without a tail isn't something that is common in this breed, but I have heard it has happend and especially in the dogs that don't meet the breed standard. I sincerly wish I could be of more help with you but since we can't see your dog there isn't any way to tell.

: Please take a look at the link below for the Breed Standard, maybe this will help you make the decision.

: Have a Happy New Year

Hi, Ashley,

In addition to what Linda has said, a short tail at birth would be considered a birth defect in a Jack Russell. I know of only one breed (though there may be more) that is born with a short tail, and it has a different body, different ears and a different coat from the JRT. Very easy to tell the difference between it and a Jack Russell.

I'm very sorry to hear about this breeder, but I hope you'll socialize the daylights out of your little guy to try to make up for some of what he was missing in the beginning.

Good luck!

Jane
