He thought possible a tick may have bitten her (it wasn't a tick cause I've never seen one on her and ticks normally burrow in and stay on the dog) but it was most likely small red ants that are in my front yard in the grass where I bring her. Hi Barry,
Just a thought, but don't you have your dog on Frontline or a Flea and Tick Preventive? If this is the case when a tick bites a dog they don't burrow in, they attach, bite get the preventive in them and then fall off in a few hours.
You may not have just noticed it and since you are in S. FL ticks are really don't get killed by the cold weather. You also have fire ants in that area, and that may be the case also.

Otherwise this is hard to answer since we can't see your dog but I suspect that you Vet is right on the Money!!
