Question:

: About 3 months ago, my wife and I got a fantastic little JRT ("Spike) who is behaving quite well and we are having a blast.
: One thing that concerns me is how he seems almost jealous when my wife and I show any affection towards each other. Additionally, he seems to really enjoy giving us "kisses" (licks in my face area), specifically to me. Even a simple hug will cause him to jump on us, scratch us with his paws amd struggle to give me a "kiss".
: Is this a problem? It's becoming more annoying as time goes on because he just goes crazy when he can't be right by me, and seems almost sad when I discipline him from this.
: Is this normal? Have I spoiled him and this is his way of thanking me or is this something more? What can I do to get him to settle down with his affection towards me? He's a very sweet dog, and gives us next to no real problems...

Hi Bryan,

In risk of sounding like a mean old grouch, I must say I don't particuarly appreciate dogs who insist on washing my face or examining my tonsils, nose & ears. A nice little 'kiss' is one thing....a physical exam quite another.

I've had success in breaking this behavior by saying, "NO", putting the dog on the floor, then getting up and walking away. I really can't say if this behavior is rooted in jealousy/dominance/whatever, but if you make it clear you don't enjoy it, the dog will stop...or at least slow down a bit. I have one licker and one terrier who likes to 'mouth' my hand. After repeated NOs & walking away, they no longer do it.

Well, they'll try it occasionally! Then it's back to NO.

The best training aid in this scenario is to IGNORE the dog. JRs think they're the center of the universe, and nothing gets their attention like being ignored.

Best,
Judy
