Question:

: I have had my rescue JRT for almost five years. She is crate trained and supposedly housebroken. During the last five weeks, she has begun barking non-stop during the day, defecating and urinating in her crate. She is in her crate in the mornings and after lunch when I go back to work, she is free to move about the condo. I walk her 6 times per day. During the last several weeks, I have re-arranged my livingroom and am having it painted and recarpeted. That's the only change. I have received two notices from my HOA about Amy's barking. One more that I will be fined then I will be asked to remove her from the premises. I am DESPERATE. I love my JRT. I have tried a signal bark collar but nothing seems to deter her. I need suggestions ASAP. THANKS TO YOU ALL!

Dear Eda,

The change you describe is obviously a big one for your little terrier. Not only are there strangers in her (your!) home but also some pretty nasty fumes from both the carpet and the paint.

I suggest you get Amy out of the house until the work is completed. Perhaps a friend or family member would allow Amy to stay with them during the day or you could check with your vet to see if the clinic would board her while you're at work.

Until the cause of her barking is eliminated, I don't think you're going to be able to stop her.

Good luck,
Leslie
