Question:

: Just a quick question. What are your thoughts about electronic colars (the ones used on hunting dogs, positive and negative tones, and zaps)? I think they are quite extreme for general use but others in my family feel differently. I can't imagine that they are the same as the electronic fences. Am I wrong? We've thought of getting one to work on some training issues, but I don't like the idea at all! I would rather do more hands on training and classes with my pup. What do you think?

Hi Jonna,
Here's my take: I would use an electronic collar for life-and-death situations and if all other resources had been exhausted. That'd be a pretty big problem. I have yet to encounter a training issue that couldn't be resolved otherwise (and keep in mind I've probably fostered close to 70 rescues and never encountered a problem too large for a clicker).
If you haven't tried obedience class or other more positive methods of training with your dog, it is not time to purchase an electronic collar. They are for EXTREME cases, not everyday commands and general training.
Bottomline, if you don't like the idea, don't do it!
