Question:

: I saw a few articles on Kava Herbs and then ran across a company selling dog Kava Bones as treats. Evidently, the kava herbs help in relaxation and anxiety. The site stated that they would help your dog with separation/anxiety attacks when you were away. They also stated that they were totally safe and harmless as far as side effects or health problems.
: Can anyone confirm this to be safe? If so, are kava bones actually effective?
: Thanks, I love this forum!!

Hi Josh,

I don't know much about kava but I do know that the FDA is looking into possible harmful side effects from its use.

Here is a list of side effects I found doing a search:

Higher doses and long term use can lead to hypertension, reduced protein levels, blood cell abnormalities, liver damage, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, visual impairment, dizziness and dry and scaly skin.

Seeing that this herb has not really been approved for medicinal use, personally I would stay away from it.

Regards.
Marie
