Question:

: Hi, my question is about my 9 month old JRT rolling around in other animals droppings. We will be playing catch at the park and he will just stop and get it all over him. He will also do it when he goes out in the back yard. I live in a wooded area and have not found where these droppings are, but sometimes I have to bathe him twice a day. He likes to get it around his neck, that is the most common spot where I find it. Your help is needed, the only solution I can think of, is not to let him go out by himself, but what about when we are playing catch?

: Thank You

Hi Bruce,

Many of us live with this dilemma I'm afraid. JRTs love to roll in animal droppings, if my two find deer droppings in the yard they dive right in rolling in it and eating it to boot! That stuff must be real special haha!

Anyway you are right there is no stopping them from doing this. This is natural canine behavior passed along generations since the day of the wolf. You have several choices, you can patrol your yard and try to find the stuff (time consuming and downright impossible for us mere mortals), not let him out by himself (but even that doesn't work too well as you have to be quicker than him, and believe me by the time you know he's ready to roll the deed will be done), or continue to bathe him (I would do spot bathing instead of a full body bath otherwise you risk drying his skin and coat out too much).

Let's see catch vs rolling in poop....hmmmm...I think the poop will win out!

Regards,
Marie
