Question:

: The obedience class I'm attending is using choke chain though I've tried not to "tug" my 3-yr-old spayed JRT as much as possbile which results "our team work" on heeling not as perfect as others (handlers & their dogs). Nevertheless, I'm happy with the results both of us have achieved so far (with less tugging of course). I used treats to reinforce good/acceptable behaviour and always hold a treat in my left hand to entice her to heel close to me. I know you gays/gals advocate clicker training and would be glad if you could briefly explain how it works. Thanks.

Hi Belinda,
There are entire books published about clicker training, and it's not really something that can be summed up on a message board. If you were here, I could show you the basics in about 10 minutes, but there would still be more follow-up learning for you to do.
Basically, clicker training is a form of operant conditioning. It was first used in dolphins. When you introduce the clicker properly, the dog learns to associate the click (or reward word or hand signal) as a conditioned reinforcer for whatever behavior he is doing at that time. Then the reward comes. It is a positive reinforcement method that is exponentially more effective than just treats and praise alone.
The best way to learn, in all methods of training, is hands-on. There are also videos and books available, as I mentioned. If you use the search feature, you'll find several posts which list online store and resources.
Have fun!
