dog biting his own foot

I have a 3 year old jrt who has a problem with one of his rear feet, he will begin by licking it constantly,then he will start to growl and nip at it then after a short while he will be barking and acting like he had dipped his foot in boiling water. He has been doing this for about a week now but to look at his foot there seems to be nothing wrong with it.
