leash training

We have a 4 1/2 month old JR cross. Training in most areas is going very well with lots of praise and consistant "No's". The problem I am unsure how to deal with is leash training. I went to go for a walk and thought I would take the puppy. I slipped on the leash - none choker chain type - and the puppy went bolistic at the first small tug. We went along fine for about 3 ft and then he was snarling, flipping and biting at the end of the leash. It took 10-15 min before I could even get my hand close enough to gently take off the collar. The neighbor saw me and thought he had been hit by a car.I was amazed at the reaction and now am stumped as what the next step should be. All other areas of training and disipline are going great.
