| Question: : Hello- : My husband and I recently took in a 12 yr old JRT from a person who was moving and couldn't take him. We already have a male wire fox terrier(3 yr) and a female JRT (4yr). My wire fox terrier is very submissive and the JRT is socialized well. The new JRT gets along fine with my two dogs except for when he is in one of our laps. Then he shows agression towards the other dogs if they come near. He is also marking which is another issue. I think that these problems are the result of his original owner not spending enough time with him. Should we take him to obedience class? What suggestions do you have for this situation. : Thanks for your help-
Thanks for taking this senior citizen in! It's never too late for obedience school! I don't know if at his advanced age he should be neutered but that's something to address with your vet. I'm not sure how much it will help with the marking problem at this age. You will need to be vigilant with him though and try not to allow him out of your sight. Also make sure to clean all the areas with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle to lessen the chance of him re-marking the area. If he is getting growly on your laps, then he hasn't earned the privilege. When he behaves that way, get him off your lap. He'll eventually pick up that if he growls he gets no lap time. Regards, |
