| Question: : For the most part, my puppy seems to be getting better about not peeing in the house, but when he does have an accident, he does not tell me that he has to go and just pees. I've tied bells to the front door and ring them every time we go out so he knows that to go out you have to ring the bell, but he won't do it on his own. : He also "tinkles" when he gets really excited - when he meets new people, when I come home, etc. : What can I do to train his not to pee inside and to warn me or tell me he has to go outside.
There is an FAQ or two about housebreaking on this website. I'll post the links below. I also believe there is one about submissive urination, but just incase there's not.. Excitement and/or submissive urination is common for pups. Not all pups will do it, but there are several that do. Some pups will grow out of it. Here are a few tips though.. When you get home, ignore the pup for 5 to 10 minutes until he calms down. Get down on his level and let him approach you, don't approach him. Pet him under the chin rather than over the top of his head. Don't get overly excited in the way you speak to him. This will just increase his excitement. As far as accidents inside, some pups just take longer than others. I've known pups that take up to a year to be completely housebroken, and some even longer. Take him out often. Look for warning signals. Sometimes they're subtle, but they're there. Don't wait for him to always tell you he needs to go out, just take him out often. Praise him like crazy when he goes potty outside. Hope this helps, Jane Colvin Submissive Urination FAQ | |||
