Question:

: I just adopted a wonderful 2-year old female. She weighs 12.5 lb and needs a couple more (I can see her ribs). How much and how often should I give her food?
: Also, with my previous dog I used to give him vegetables used in making chicken soup (boiled carrots, celery, onion..) is this a good idea once a week for a JRT as well?

: Thank you.

Hi Val,

You will need to start with the amount that's recommended on the bag. Each food is different and there is no set amount of food for any particular dog. If the amount on the bag isn't enough, try adding a little more. When you see she's putting the weight on, make sure she doesn't start gaining too much, or reduce it a little more.

As far as veggies, if you want any real nutritional value out of them for her, you'll need to feed them raw and puree them. They can't break down cellulase and raw whole veggies will not give dogs much in the way of nutrients.

Never feed onions. Onions are toxic to dogs. There is no set amount that will cause toxicity, it depends on the individual dog, but it's safest to NOT feed them at all.

Boiled carrots, celery, broccoli, etc., are fine as long as your dog has no problems with them.
