scabs down the back after hand stripping

Our Jack Russell rough coat developes scabs down his back after hand stripping, twice after grooming we have taken him to the vet and was put on antibotics. the last time he was shivering like he had a fever.
He also developed an ear problem that needed a microbial wash and medication twice a day. We don't know what we should do and we certainly don't want to see the vet every time he is groomed. We read the posted grooming bulletin and it was very informative and helpful and I feel a lot better about the handstripping method but this other scab problem is a big factor. Why is this happening?
