Question:

: Our Jack Russell rough coat developes scabs down his back after hand stripping, twice after grooming we have taken him to the vet and was put on antibotics. the last time he was shivering like he had a fever.
: He also developed an ear problem that needed a microbial wash and medication twice a day. We don't know what we should do and we certainly don't want to see the vet every time he is groomed. We read the posted grooming bulletin and it was very informative and helpful and I feel a lot better about the handstripping method but this other scab problem is a big factor. Why is this happening?

Response:

Dear Martha,

Our 9 year old terriers (one rough, one broken) have been stripped both by hand and with stripping combs/tools and they have not developed any sores or scabs from the procedure. We now use electric clippers to remove their hair and still have had no problems.

It's possible that your terrier may be really stressed during the grooming and the stress is showing in the form of ultra-sensitive skin. I suggest you may want to try something different the next time you think he needs a hair-cut.

Good luck,
Leslie
