JRT New to the home and 2 yrs old

Question:

We got our JRT about 3 days ago. We saved him from a previous owner who wanted to put him down. He is jittery,jumpy, and comes to us with his tail down and ears back(Scared). We have also noticed no formal training done by previous owner.
Can you help tell me why he might be so jumpy and how to train a 2 and 1/2 year old JRT?
