Question:

: We got our JRT about 3 days ago. We saved him from a previous owner who wanted to put him down. He is jittery, jumpy, and comes to us with his tail down and ears back(Scared). We have also noticed no formal training done by previous owner.
: Can you help tell me why he might be so jumpy and how to train a 2 and 1/2 year old JRT?
: Thanks!

Response:

Dear Bridgett and Todd,

First, it is not uncommon for a dog to be nervous or scared in a new situation. Second, I think it's safe to speculate that his previous life may not have been so wonderful if the owner wanted him put down. On behalf of the Forum volunteers, I thank you for giving him a second chance to have a wonderful life. :-)

If you haven't already, I suggest you have him thoroughly examined by a vet to make sure he is physically sound. If he is healthy, I suggest you then consult a behaviorist. A behaviorist will evaluate your terrier's actions/reactions and then teach you how to best deal with any problems and how to train him according to his personality. At this point, I advise that you hold off on taking him to a formal training class until you are all more comfortable with each other.

Ask your vet for a recommendation for a behaviorist in your area. I suggest that you also contact the JRTCA State Representative and local JRTCA Affiliate Club for a recommendation.

Again, thank you for saving the little guy and our best wishes to you all.

Leslie
