Question:

: In a little over a week, I am going to be traveling from Michigan to Florida and have opted to bring my jrt along. We will be down there for two weeks, the first three days at Disney and then out to my family's beach house for the rest of the time. I would like to board my pup in the Orlando area for the few days we are at the parks. I know Disney has boarding but they only feed the dogs once a day and won't let them out of the cages. So, I am wondering if anyone knows a good place to board in the Orlando area. I would really appreciate and suggestions. I would also love to know any precautions I should take for the first time exposing my pup to the beach.

: Thank you for your response.

Response:

Dear Nicole,

I suggest you contact the JRTCA State Representative(s) in Florida (link below) for information about boarding kennels in the Orlando area. Please be patient as it may take several emails to find a fellow JRT owner in the area. :-)

Dogs can suffer from both heat exhaustion (too much sun and exercise) and hypothermia (extended exposure to cold water) and pups are more easily overcome then adults. Make sure your pup has plenty of shade and fresh water available at all times; you may need to give him/her a "timeout" in the middle of the day. If the ocean water is too cold for a human to handle, it is too cold for your pup too. Also, do not assume that your dog can swim. :-) Salt water and sand are irritants so be sure to thoroughly rinse (not shampoo) your pup after a day at the beach.

Have a great vacation!
Leslie
