Question:

: I plan to purchase a jack russell puppy. What do I need to look for to ensure it is a true JR? Will the fact that it is registered be enough?

: Thanks

Hi John,

You're wise to ask these questions ahead of time before the soft brown eyes of a puppy melts your heart and you throw caution to the winds ;)

I am going to provide you with some links to read before you go out and purchase your puppy. An informed consumer is less likely to get "taken."

Unfortunately these days, registration papers are not an indication of "quality" and there are LOTS of fly-by-night registries that cater to the back-yard and puppy-mill breeders. These types of breeders rarely care who they mate with who, and puppy-mill breeders don't care at all period.

Pet store puppies are products of puppy mills. The chances of getting a nice quality dog from these places are pretty much nil, although they will charge you "show quality" prices!

Your safest bet is to ask the national breed club for a list of reputable breeders in your area.

Many breeders with the JRTCA sign a "code of ethics" and you should expect a contract with your pup, whether pet or show quality. Many of them screen for various inherited diseases/conditions and test their breeding stock. Many make careful matings and research out pedigrees before breeding any terrier.

Please read the following links!

Marie
