eating wood ie a stick or mulch chips

Question:

Hi

I have a 6 month old male JRT. First he is a picky eater. Second. When we are in the yart he seems to go after twigs and mulch chips. I remove them from his mouth. If he is on the deck with his leash on he still manages to find wood.

Is there any way to break this behavior?
I give him plenty of exercise since my family and I are home most of the time.
