Hi Caroline,

All I can tell you is I have seen some ungroomed rough coated JRTs that can be very hairy! Although I haven't seen one with hair as long as a shitzu (a show groomed one anyway) but I have seen Russells with hair about 4 inches long or so.

When you go to a terrier trial, you won't see dogs real hairy because their coats have been hand stripped so the judge can get a good look at the dog.

When you have time go through the picture gallery I am sure there are probably a few "hairy" JRTs somewhere in there. One of my friends has a strictly pet JRT so she has never stripped him and he is one cute hairy guy.

Regardless, the most important thing is that your dog loves you and you love your dog. In the larger scheme of things nothing else matters.
