Question:

: My newly adopted (4 to 5 yr old) JR female is very sweet and affectionate. My female 15" beagle is 1 1/2 years old and we have her over 1 year. They were introduced 3 weeks ago. First it was curiosity from beagle's side - sniffing her rear etc. and JR became annoyed, growled and snapped without biting. Now, 3 weeks later, they seem to be friends! But, they do mount each other occasionally - very funny to watch - and put each other's mouth into theirs. They try to put the paws onto each other. Will this rivalry for dominance end? They seem to like each other and run onto the deck to be with each other - when they're done sniffing each other, running around etc. they each go into their own space to nap. Toys don't seem to interest the JR. She is - on the other hand - so well behaved that she makes our beagle look like a juvenile delinquent. Well, we've found out JR's are super intelligent. We love both the same and give them "alone time with us on the sofa" every night. Question: Does it look to you like they're both OK together (and happy, I hope)??

Response:

Hi Herta,

Sounds to me like your girls are OK together and happy, especially given the mouth/mount/paws behavior. My guess is that one of them will eventually be dominant in the long run..in a loving way.

Best,
Judy
