People food feeding - how?

Hello! Thanks for all your great information on this board. I have learned so much to help my little guy. He is now in puppy kindergarten and getting smarter by the day!

My question is regarding food. Occasionally I like to give bits of oranges, or apples, or chicken, etc as a treat when fixing a meal or having a snack. Is it better to just toss it to him, or should I put it in his food bowl? I have heard just giving it to him may encourage him to beg for food from us.
