Question:

: My 11 month old Jack Russell terrier who is unneutered for breeding has discovered our female unspayed dog. She won't let him near her thankfully. He will whine all day and all night. He is not eating either. The newest concern is that he is peeing "secretly" all over the house! Sometimes right in front of us. He was a sweet and well behaved dog until his hormones kicked in. I know that unneutered dogs are hard to handle but is there a way to gain some control? Also today he "leaked" all over the house, I don't know what it was but he would leave drips and puddles all over...is this still part of the hormones?

Response:

Hi Jackie,
This is called Marking and this is what unneutered dogs do, and there is no stoping it except for neutering at an early age. Neutering at a later age after he has started Marking, it will lessen but it will not stop it completely unless caught early in the first stages. When he is breed it will get even worse than it is now.

If you female is in heat, she may not be ready yet but I can tell you she will let him and anything else that resembles a male near her when she is primed up normally about 10 to 16 days from when she started bleeding.

If you would like to find out more about marking you may use our Go to Ground search and I am sure that you will find many posts on this subject.

Hope this helps you some,
Best,
Linda
