Question:

: Hello, our 5 yr jr whom we adopted about 2 mos ago gets the same food as our almost 2 yr beagle. It's Eucanuba hi performance. It lists as the first three lamb, chicken, corn and then a lot of other things. Now I'm worried about the cornmeal. Should we switch them to another food that's without corn? Both love the food and are healthy eaters. We had digestive troubles with beagle who'll eat anything, was in hospital last year and this year, X-rays etc. but I don't think it's food related since she picks up about anything (now wears muzzle when walking) and the jr never picks up garbage. She's a little lady. Question: Is this a good food to keep giving my girls?

Response:

Hi Herta,

All of us here thank you for adopting an older terrier in need!

Well Eukanuba is a good brand of dog food and if she seems to be thriving on it I really don't see a need to change it. The only thing I would be concerned about is the fact that it's "high performance." Normally these types of food have more calories, protein and such for very active dogs that burn off calories at a high rate.

I would watch it to make sure your girls don't get fat on it. If they start to get fat, you may have to switch to a different food, one lower in calories or you will have to drastically cut back the amount you are feeding.

I am including a link that discusses food and there is also a link provided to an analysis of many of the premium brands of dry food on the market. You might want to take a look at it.

Regards,
Marie
