Question:

: Hi I have a question about collars and leashes. Well 'Vexx' currently wears a nylon collar. He is 13 weeks now, and we got him last saturday. He abosolutely does not like wearing his collar. We're thinking about getting him a leather one. He keeps on scratching that area. When we take it off him, he stops scratching. Also with his leash, whenever we're out walking him, it tends to get tangled around him, and we have to continually stop and fix it. Which collar and leash would be the best? Oh, and he will be going into the kindergarden class this tuesday, and I would like to know what are the best treats to bring. Thanks a bunch. I love your site!

Dear Kristel,

Check your little guy's neck to make sure there are no sores, bites, abrasions. If there are none, then Vexx is likely just "fussing" at something new which means he would probably fuss at a leather collar too. It's okay for you to remove his collar when he's in his crate or under strict supervision.

Puppies (and puppy owners) are expected to be a tad uncoordinated when it comes to dealing with a leash; this is why we attend puppy kindergarden classes! A flat buckle collar and six foot leash are pretty standard for a puppy class. Training treats should be small, soft and easily ingested so the pup stays focused on the training, not the act of chewing. :-) Most pet stores sell these "training" treats; I suggest you contact the training school/instructor for specific recommendations before you get to class.

Though it's been over 9 years since we attended a puppy class, I still remember how much fun we had with the other owners and all of the pups; I hope you have the same wonderful experience. Best of luck and thank you for your kind words about the site.
